The Depths of Valhar
The gate does not open, it was always open. Stand at the threshold where the flowers crackle. Speak the oldest words. Not aloud, but beneath your breath. Let it flow through you and consume. Through Valhar, all will be revealed.
THE INTENTION
This piece is meant to give a sense of unease — the fog, the eerie red glow, the unnatural island. Something lost to time, but never forgotten. It exists in a place no one remembers the word for, but nobody forgets the feeling.
THE DECISIONS
-
Light
The red glow isn't hidden the way it is in some of the earlier pieces — you can see exactly where it's coming from, a stone half-buried in fog at the base of the island. What you can't see is why it's still lit, or for how long it's been sitting there unattended. The fog carries the red out across the foreground, mixing with the cool blue-black of the void until the two colors bleed into each other.
-
Strata
Most of this series has stayed relatively flat — a figure, a horizon, a single plane of action. This one stacks: dark rock base, then moss and grass climbing the mass, then bare stone peaks breaking through at the top. The layers give the eye a path to climb instead of just a scene to take in, which is new for this portfolio.
-
Palette
Deep space-black surrounds the island, broken only by scattered stars and a faint ambient wash from the upper right. Moss-green cascades down the rock in a way that reads as alive despite the setting. The red is the only warm note in the whole frame, which is exactly why it pulls focus.
-
The Figure
Small, red-cloaked, standing on the rocks near the peak, looking out rather than down at the glow. Same recurring motif as the rest of the series — a single figure, dwarfed by the scale of what surrounds them, present but not explaining anything.
THE RESULT
Gives a similar vibe to The Convergence — a light from a lower level, a sense of dread. Same universe, different corner of it: an island that's been here a long time, holding onto something it never agreed to explain.
