The Release — hero image

The Release

There's a fog. Always a fog. Dense and swirling, writhing with unholy purpose. Through the fog there are flowers. It loves flora. Dense thickets of trees, fields of flowers, unnaturally tall and wild forests. It seems obsessed. Each site has had something beautiful, something irresistible. I've been researching the signs, the artifacts that are the tell. When I arrive at a site, I take it all in very slowly, with methodology.

THE INTENTION

This one's easily one of my favorites. It has a very dark, Lovecraftian vibe to it — the kind that makes you uncomfortable, where you know whatever's happening probably shouldn't be. I wanted it to feel like you could hear the sloshing of the water against the roots of the trees.

THE DECISIONS

  • Light

A single vertical beam splits the sphere down the middle, teal-green, the only clean line in an otherwise churning frame. Everything around it is soft and diffuse — the beam is the one thing in the image that feels certain of itself.

  • Composition

The figure stands waist-deep in water, small and centered, directly in front of something enormous. Not fleeing, not approaching — just standing in it. The water around them ripples outward in patterns too regular to be natural, which is doing the sloshing the intention talks about without needing sound.

  • The Figure

Red-cloaked, back turned, same silhouette that keeps showing up across this series. Here the scale gap between figure and subject is about as extreme as it gets — the sphere behind them could swallow the whole frame.

  • Atmosphere

Moss, dripping trees, standing water, low light — a swamp that's been left alone a very long time. Nothing about the setting explains the sphere. It just arrived, or grew, or was always there, and the forest kept doing what forests do around it.

THE RESULT

The Release — final image

The voice in the quote reads like the same researcher who turns up again in The Severance of Galendieer — tracking sites, cataloguing what's irresistible about each one. Different location, same investigation. Whatever it's following isn't finished yet.
